BN DARE TO BURN PEOPLE TILL DEATH?

By : DAP MEDIA

THE visit on last Saturday to the Beaufort district and Membakut town by the Sabah DAP KK MP Hiew King Cheu with Vice Chairman, Edward Ewol Mujie and the Beaufort Chief, Jamil Zakaria was a successful trip to understand more about the various problem faced by the people there.

The group started off in the Beaufort Tamu ground where they were joined by the Pakatan Rakyat partners PKR and PAS leaders on a young voters registration drive and also to receive public complaints fro the areas.

The PKR Thaufik Bin Ruschi had also arranged a PR meeting cum lunch with the PR members in Beaufort, where Hiew was invited to give a briefing on the latest political situation in Sabah. The question on SAPP attacking the DAP was raised by members.

The group later moved on to Membakut town where they have visited the old town side and listen to quite a few comments from the people there. Some were talking about the 12 units of burnt down town houses which were burnt to the ground during January this year.

They asked why the government did not help them and assist them on the rebuild. Instead the government asked for a heavy premium for the renewal of land titles and use of the old site.

The historical old wooden town house was built in 1931 which is 80 years old now. The unique design is beautiful and the wooden structures are still solid and standing strong. The only problem is that the beautiful structure had not been given a paint coating to protect the timber surface, and that makes it looks dirty and ugly.

The 3 blocks of timber built shops which housed almost thirty shops are the lively hood of the people here. It is a small country town along the way to Beaufort, and they are almost being forgotten. Some folks are the second or third generation living here.

The nearby kampongs people like to spend time and buying their needs from here. They said this little beautiful town should be preserved and maintain as a national heritage, and the buildings here has the historical value of 80 years behind them.

Hiew went round the town and talking to the people, and inspected the burnt down site of the 12 shops, he felt there is a lack of attention being provided by the authorities and the government towards the up keeping of this historical town which has a long history nearing 100 years. The wooden shop building is not protected from fire and there is no fire fighting facilities.

Hiew was told that there is no fire brigade available in Membakut town. The people here urges the government to immediately build a fire station here to serve the nearby kampongs and the Bongawan town too.

Hiew urges the government to declare the old shop here as a National Heritage and set up plans to preserve the very old buildings, and at the same time provide funds to reinstall the structures, beautified the outlook, install fire fighting sprinkles inside and to build a fire station here. We cannot afford to let the fire burn down another block of shop here. It is a lost to everyone in Sabah.

Hiew said he will try to bring the matter up in the coming Parliament sitting if time allowed during the sitting.
