49 YEARS REMINDER OF SABAH INDEPENDENCE DAY

KOTA KINABALU : Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) will hold a celebration in commemoration of Merdeka Day on August 31 with the theme "Sabah Merdeka 49 Tahun".

SAPP Deputy President and Organizing Chairman, Amde Sidik, said the theme was chosen because Sabah gained independence in 1963 and not 1957.

He said the festival will be held at City Park (next to KK High Court) here at 2:00 pm and members of the public are invited to come to the peaceful event.

Amde said non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other political parties in Sabah are also invited to attend the independence celebration.

"It is hoped that the gathering will bring awareness to the people of Malaysia, especially those living in Sabah that Sabah gained independence on August 31, 1963," he said.

He said Malaysia was formed on 16 September 1963 and the Malaysia Agreement was signed containing the 20 points as safeguard of Sabah's sovereignty and rights but sadly over the years, were increasingly eroded.

Despite 49 years in Malaysia, Sabah is still backward in all respects. Although endowed with various natural resources such as oil, natural gas and large tracts of fertile land, Sabah still remains the poorest state in Malaysia.

Amde said that SAPP fights to champion the rights of the people to seek autonomy for Sabah.
