WITH the slogan of ‘No RCI, No Election’, Bersih Sabah committee is targeting 100,000 supporters statewide for its planned peaceful two-hour sit-in protest on April 28.
Its chief Andrew Ambrose, who is better known as Atama, told a press conference yesterday that those who are concerned with the nation’s election system and related Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) issues are invited to gather at Padang Merdeka on April 28 from 2pm to 4pm.
The peaceful sit-in protest will be held simultaneously with the Himpunan Hijau protest against the Lynas rare earth operation.
He said the sit-in protest is to express their deep disappointment over the continued manipulation of the electoral system.
He said Bersih 3.0 will be a time for reflection by all Malaysians, particularly those in power, as to the kind of legacy they intend to leave for the next generation.
He said members of the public need not be afraid as it is to fight for their own rights.
The Home Ministry has been informed on the sit-in protest and members of political parties are also invited to participate, he said.
He added that it is the time to demand the setting up of RCI since politicians have failed to get the Federal Government to set it up.
Amborse said that in the city, they are expecting more than 20,000 people to come to Padang Merdeka to support the sit-in protest that will be held simultaneously nationwide.
According to him, many of the recommendations of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) and indeed the eight demands of Bersih 2.0 can be implemented before the 13th general elections.
In fact, they must be implemented now, he said.
“The PSC report in our view contains some sound recommendations. However the PSC has fallen far short in many areas. What was hoped for was that a tough, no-nonsense approach be taken by the PSC to ensure that the next elections would be clean and fair.
He said Bersih Sabah is a working committee made up of youths and member of local non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
In Sabah, the campaign is endorsed by Anne Lasimbang of Partners of Communities Organisations (PACOS Trust). (theborneopost)
