BUSINESSMAN CHARGED WITH SOLICITING, TAKING BRIBE

A LOCAL businessman was yesterday charged in the Corruption Court here with soliciting and receiving a bribe as a gratification to obtain two land grants in Pitas four years ago.

Suaidin @ Shuhaiddin Langkab @ Langab, 62, pleaded not guilty to both charges before judge Dean Wayne Daly, who set May 24 this year for case management and to fix the trial dates.

The court also granted Suaidin RM20,000 bail with one local surety pending disposal of the case.

In the first charge, Suaidin is accused of corruptly asking for RM400,000 in bribe from one Chew Ai Wah purportedly as a payment to an officer with the Land and Survey Department for processing the issuance of the land grants.

He allegedly committed the offence in room No 624 at Tang Dynasty Hotel here about 9.30pm on August 28, 2008.

In the second charge, Suaidin is accused of corruptly receiving RM150,000 from Chew for the said purpose.

The offence was allegedly committed at Restauran Penyu, Nexus Karambunai Resort about 9pm on Sept 19, 2008.

Each of the charges under Section 10 (a) (aa) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1997 carries a jail term of between 14 days and 20 years and a fine of up to five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The prosecution is expected to call 13 witnesses to testify in the trial of the accused, who was represented by counsel Arthur Bornie.
