ITALIAN football was in mourning yesterday afternoon after a player died following an on-pitch collapse. In a terrible echo of Bolton star Fabrice Muamba’s shock hospitalisation last month, Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini was pronounced dead after suffering a cardiac arrest during his team’s Serie B match at Pescara.
The 25-year-old collapsed in the 31st minute and received treatment on the pitch - reportedly including a heart massage in a bid to resuscitate him - before being rushed to hospital.
The match was abandoned and the players left the field in tears.
“We have done everything possible to save him but he never regained consciousness,” doctor Leonardo Paloscia told reporters.
Another doctor at the Pescara hospital said he was dead on arrival at hospital. Following the tragedy, all Italian football league games have been suspended. (thesun.co.uk)
