PARALYSED MAN FACES 3 COUNTS OF RAPE

A PARTIALLY paralysed man was charged at the Sessions Court here yesterday to three counts of raping a 15-year-old student, November last year.

Mohd Sapawi Ismail, 27, who used to be a scuba diving instructor before suffering nerve damage from waist down in 2010, had to be wheeled into court in a wheelchair.

The accused, from Kampung Beting Lintang, Kampung Raja in Besut allegedly raped his step niece at his house in Kampung Raja between 8 pm and 11 pm on Nov 27, 2011.

On the second and third count he is suspected of repeating the offence on Nov 28 and 29 at another house nearby, in the same village.

DPP Zul Fazliah Mahmud prosecuted and Mohd Sapawi was unrepresented.

Judge Zainal Abidin Kamarudin set April 25 for remention and the accused was not allowed bail.

The offence under Section 376 of the Penal Code is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and possible caning, upon conviction.

Meanwhile, at the Magistrates Court, a plumber suspected of trafficking 80.4 grammes of Methamphetamine was charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Nor Azrie Mohamad, 25, allegedly committed the offence at a house in Kampung Jeram, Manir here at 11.30 am, on March 19.

DPP Zul Fazliah prosecuted and the accused was unrepresented.

Magistrate Rozianti Mohamed Hanaphi set May 16 for remention pending the chemist report.
