BULLET….Robert Mitchell holding the bullet that was found in his leg.
FORMER Royal Navy Commando Robert Mitchell holds a bullet that was stuck in his leg for 40 years — and he never knew it was there. Doctors found the inch-long steel round as Robert, 63, had a routine hernia operation.
The grandad from Dartmouth, Devon, had a nagging pain in his groin for years but did not know why. He said: “I’d no idea it was there. The surgeon said I ruined his scalpel.”
He believes he may have been shot without realising after being hit by a mortar during covert operations in Vietnam in 1971.
Now the hero — awarded a Distinguished Service Medal for his work in the Far East in the 1970s — wears it on a chain.
He said: “It’s been with me all these years so I’ve put it round my neck — which is better than where it was.” (thesun.co.uk)
