THE HUNGER GAMES' EERIE DISTRICT 12 FOR SALE?

SALE......Peeta Mellark's workplace can be found on the property up for sale.

The Hunger Games did superbly well at the box office. So much so that Henry River Mill Village - the 'hometown' of heroine Katniss Everdeen and hero Peeta Mellark - has been swarming with curious visitors looking to catch a glimpse of the dilapidated District 12.

“I'm getting too many visitors,” owner Wade Shepherd, 83, who hasn't read the book (no word on seeing the movie) told the Associated Press.

“Day and night, they're driving through, taking pictures, getting out and walking. I'm just bombarded with people,” he said.

And if the fans want it so badly, Shepherd is willing to sell the entire 29ha of land for USD1.4mil (RM4.3mil).

“It’s been for sale two and a half years and I dropped it USD400,000 (RM1.2mil) in price a while ago because of the economy.

“Before the movie I had some interest from one gentleman who wanted to knock it all down and build new houses. But I would hate to lose the history.

“But I’ve had lots of calls since the movie. I would be happy if a fan bought it. It would mean they might preserve it,” Shepherd added.

HOME....The house on the left was outfitted as the Everdeen's home.

The abandoned mill town in North Carolina has at least 20 uninhabited buildings and a former company store that was featured as the Mellark family bakery in the movie - the workplace to Hunger Games' tribute Peeta played by actor Josh Hutcherson.

The Everdeen family home is also present as one of the scarce buildings left in the area.

With the other two books - Catching Fire and Mockingjay - are expected to be made, that village could just end up being hot property.

The follow-up movie, Catching Fire is currently scheduled for a Nov 22, 2013 release. (Agencies)
