KHALWAT: 16 COUPLES NABBED

KOTA KINABALU: Sixteen Muslim couples, including private college students and civil servants, were nabbed for allegedly committing khalwat (close proximity) in 18 budget hotels here on New Year's Day.

Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) Assistant Enforcement Chief, Khamis Jamil, said they were caught inside hotel rooms during an integrated anti-vice operation led by the department, together with the police, Immigration Department, National Anti-Drugs Agency, National Registration Department and City Hall.

"The couples detained in the operation from 11pm to 5am were aged between 20 and 41.

"All were brought to the department's office in Wisma Muis for investigation under Section 84 of the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1995," he said.

Khamis said four young Muslims, including three women, aged between 19 and 20 were also caught drinking alcohol in public places here in the same operation. (DE)
