IT'S THAT time again when
local Chinese TV's cream of the crop will vie for the top honour in the
industry. Two years after the first winners were crowned, the Golden Awards is
back, with the top 10 nominees in the three categories, namely drama, non-drama
and viewers' choice, being unveiled recently.
A total of 23 awards will be
handed out at the award show, which will be aired live from Putrajaya
International Convention Centre (PICC) on Sept 22.
Period drama Age of Glory 2,
8TV anniversary drama A Time to Embrace and light-hearted sitcom Time FM lead
the pack with nine nominations, followed closely by Footprints in the Sand and
Forget Me Not, each with eight nods.
All eyes are on the fight
between Debbie Goh, Chris Tong and Yenn Teoh for the coveted award of Best
Actress. Despite being first-time nominees, Tong and Teoh manage to score
double entries into the category. Tong wowed critics with her natural delivery
in A Time to Embrace as well as investigative series The Adjusters, while Teoh,
her co-star in The Adjusters and a veteran in the industry, is nominated for
both The Adjusters and Footprints in the Sand.
On the other hand, Goh, 32,
also earns two nods in the category with her performances in Age of Glory 2 and
Glowing Embers. In fact, the beauty queen-turned-actress is seen as a strong
contender for the title, when Yeo Yann Yann - to whom she lost out for Best
Actress in 2010 - is not up for the award this year.
Instead, Yeo - who surprised
everyone when she got hitched in March - is competing in another category: Best
Supporting Actress. The mother-to-be, who charms us with two entirely different
characters in Time FM and A Time to Embrace, will be pitted against seasoned
thespian Seck Fook Yee, who won the award two years ago. Seck is nominated for
her roles in Footprints in the Sand and Age of Glory 2.
As for the award of Best
Actor, last time's winner Melvin Sia is up for the award again with his role in
mystery thriller Goodnight DJ2, along with the likes of William San (Forget Me
Not), Frederick Lee (Glowing Embers), Henley Hii (A Time to Embrace), Leslie
Chai (Age of Glory 2) and Adrian Tan (Time FM).
Tan further proves that his
star is on the rise, with nominations in not just the category of Best Actor,
but also for Best Newcomer and Best Drama Theme Song. In fact, he is widely
seen as a favourite in the second category, which also include singer-actress
Soo Wincci, popular TV host Belinda Chee and child star Crystal Lee.
The nominees in each
category will be whittled down to five and the top five will be announced in
July. The full list of nominees can be found on here.
