A FORMER civil
servant afflicted with sex addiction in Singapore lost his job after he was
caught being absent from his desk several times during the day with no good
reasons given.
In an interview with
Lianhe Zaobao, a Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Li Jiaming revealed the plight of
his patient who had to slip off from work to find prostitutes every two hours.
If he was unable to
go out of office, he would masturbate himself in the staff toilet.
Another researcher
began by watching porn magazines and subsequently got hooked to watching porn
video clips on the internet.
He was eventually
caught by his boss after downloading too many porn on the office computers.
Sex addiction is not
an uncommon form of addiction problem in Singapore, but few sufferers step
forward to be treated either due to ignorance of the condition or fearing
embarrassment and being ostracized by their loved ones.
Psychiatrists
interviewed by Lianhe Zaobao described sex addiction as similar to addiction to
alcohol, drugs and gambling, characterized by uncontrolled and repetitive
behavior to satisfy the desire.
Occasional causal sex
with strangers or prostitutes is not considered a form of sex addiction. (asiaone)
