PUBLIC COMPLAIN ON NIGHT HAWKER STALLS

KOTA KINABALU Member of Parliament, Dr Hiew King Cheu has asked DBKK on the new arrangement of the hawker stalls in Kampong Air following the request by some hawkers, business owners and the general public who are anxious to know the outcome on the rearrangement plans after the various discussions held.

The rearrangement of the night market stalls here is deemed to be necessary due to the congestion, traffic flow, and the safety of the people in the area.

The director general of the DBKK, Datuk Yeo Boon Hai informed the KK MP Hiew over a telephone conversation that DBKK has finalized the plan and will get to start work soon on the rearrangement of the hawker stalls. There will be some minor work carried out to redo the car parking lots, and the road on the side of the hotels will be kept open for traffic flow at night. The affected hawkers on this road will be shifted to the other end (near Islamic Hotel) for a better location and wider space for business.

Hiew hopes he DBKK will provide additional street lighting to light up the whole night market to benefit the shoppers and the hawkers. If the night market is properly arranged and lighted up, more shoppers and tourist will come to visit and buy things from here. It will be beneficial to the hawkers doing business here.

Hiew also wants the DBKK to install some additional benches and beautification work to make the place comfortable and nice looking during the day and night hours. All these will not cost much money but the effect will be good to give KK Kampong Air a face lift.

Hiew asks DBKK to pay more attention to the car parking problems in Kampong Air where it is so difficult now to find a parking lot during the day time. He said he had received many complaints from the general public due to the limited numbers of car parks available.

The drivers have to risk traffic summons due to double parked or parking illegally. More parking spaces must be created or otherwise a multi-storey car park must be built in Kampong Air to cater for the ever increasing number of cars.
