SARAWAK NOT ‘COWBOY STATE’

MIRI : Do not dub Sarawak a “lawless, cowboy state” on account of three shooting deaths in seven months, says Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

“(Police investigations have revealed that) the three murders are isolated cases. Do not conclude that just because such cases occurred in the spate of seven months that the state is unsafe,” he told reporters after a walkabout programme at a Ramadan bazaar in the Miri indoor stadium here today.

On July 31, the police formed a special task force to investigate the three killings before submitting a report within a fortnight.

On the development in the three murders, Acryl Sani said the cases were not linked as each was fuelled by different motives.

Nevertheless, he did not rule out “territorial” or “woman-related” disputes as likely causes.

The first murder was reported in January when businessman Lau Leh Ing, 41, was gunned down while walking to his office in Sibu.

The second case involved Ang Soon Heng, 30, who was shot in the head while having breakfast at a restaurant in Kuching, the same month.

The third killing involved a 48-year-old businessman who was shot twice at point-blank range while in his car in Miri on July 30. (Bernama)
